How it Works

NZRS are licensed Asbestos removalists, however, before asbestos removal work commences there are various surveys that take place, these have been outlined below for your reference.

It is highly recommended not to take an asbestos sample yourself due to the health risks involved. Asbestos sampling & testing for ACM (asbestos-containing material) should be conducted by licenced professionals.

We can put you in touch with many independent asbestos surveyors and testing services throughout New Zealand that comply with the NZS4306:2005 and WorkSafe approved code of practice and that are BOHS IP402 qualified.

Asbestos Management Survey

An asbestos management survey will identify and safely manage all asbestos in the property or surrounding areas. This is the first stage of creating an asbestos management plan.

The survey will generally have three goals.

  • Locate, test, and record the location of the potential asbestos containing material, the extent and type of material that could be an ACM.
  • Inspect and record information on the accessibility, condition, and surface treatment of any assumed or known asbestos and ACM.
  • Determine and record the asbestos type (Class A or Class B). This is achieved by collecting samples of suspected asbestos containing materials for laboratory identification, or by assuming based on the product material type and its appearance.

Asbestos Sampling Survey & Testing

An asbestos sampling survey is conducted when there is the possibility of an Asbestos containing material (ACM) present within or around the property.

A small sample of material will be taken to be tested for asbestos by an independent asbestos testing lab. Once the test results have been received you can then determine the next steps for managing asbestos if present.

It is highly recommended not to take an asbestos sample yourself due to the health risks involved. Asbestos sampling & testing for ACM should be conducted by licenced professionals.

It is the duty of the PCBU (Person Conducting or Undertaking Business) to identify any asbestos before any refurbishment or demolition work can take place and the PCBU must ensure that the asbestos is removed before demolition or refurbishment commences.

  • The structure was constructed or installed before 1 January 2000
  • Asbestos has been identified.
  • Asbestos is likely to be present from time to time.

Asbestos Management Plan

An asbestos management plan outlines where any confirmed asbestos or asbestos-containing material is present, and how it will be managed moving forward.

The workplace PCBU must make sure a copy of the asbestos management plan is readily accessible to workers and their representatives, as well as to other PCBUs. A copy of the plan should be kept at the workplace.

Renovations and DIY Projects

If you have the traditional kiwi DIY attitude and prefer to work on your own renovation projects in and around the home then we recommend that you determine if there may be asbestos containing materials prior to the renovation and DIY work commences. There are many risks to unknowingly removing and disturbing asbestos containing materials without the correct PPE equipment and following guidelines.

If your unsure, and your home was built prior to the year 2000, then we suggest an asbestos survey and testing to be conducted prior to any DIY or renovation project.
